Each year, Burnaby marks the end of summer with Nikkei Matsuri, a lively two-day celebration of Japanese culture, community, and tradition. Returning on September 5 and 6, 2026, this well-loved event takes place at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre and welcomes visitors of all ages.
One of the largest Japanese summer events in the Lower Mainland, Nikkei Matsuri blends live performances, food, cultural experiences, and hands-on activities in a setting that feels both festive and community-focused. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning as part of your annual tradition, it’s an easy way to spend a full day exploring and taking part.
A Weekend of Culture and Celebration
Across both days, the festival grounds come alive with a full schedule of performances, activities, and experiences that reflect both traditional and contemporary Japanese culture.
Live Performances
The main stage features a packed lineup of performances, including taiko drumming, traditional dance, martial arts demonstrations, and contemporary music. With more than 20 performances planned, there’s something happening throughout the day.
Obon Dancing
At the centre of the event is Obon dance, where visitors are invited to join in and take part. Held around the outdoor stage, it’s a welcoming, shared experience, no experience needed.

Food, Shopping, and Hands-On Activities
Food and market stalls are a big part of the experience, offering plenty of reasons to take your time and explore.
Tastes of Japan
Browse a wide selection of food vendors serving classic festival dishes, from savoury favourites like okonomiyaki and takoyaki to noodles, sweets, and baked goods.
Marketplace and Vendors
Shop for artisan goods, books, and unique finds, including handmade items and gently used Japanese goods. It’s a mix of cultural items, everyday pieces, and small treasures worth taking home.
Family Activities and Crafts
Families and younger visitors can take part in traditional games like yo-yo fishing and super ball scooping, or spend time in the arts and crafts area. These hands-on activities make it easy for all ages to get involved.
