Burnaby, B.C. – More than 600 judokas from B.C., the United States, Germany and Japan took part in the Peak International judo tournament October 24 to 26 at Scotia Barn in Burnaby.
It took an army of 40 volunteers to transform an indoor soccer field at the multisport facility into a judo competition venue. Yellow and red mats were framed by green turf, making for a colourful field of play. Tournament Director Martin Sennott said it was a bit unusual to stage a judo tournament in a soccer venue. “It’s our first time here,” he explained. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen an event like this in this facility.” Four competition mats were set up over the field. “The layout for the competition area is quite good.”
The three-day, non-stop competition featured judokas in several divisions from U10 to adults. The annual Peak International is important as it’s one of the first big tournaments of the season. Participants earn points as they qualify for other events. “This is a good kick-off tournament and is very well attended,” added Sennott. “Competitors can see where they are at in the early part of the season.”
Historically, Burnaby has been strong in judo and remains one of the hubs for the sport in B.C. This Burnaby event, now in its fourth year, is popular with participants, near and far, because of the city’s central location. “This venue is easy to get to, being so close to the highway and the parking is great here,” said Sennott. “The accommodations in Burnaby are also close to the venue.”
Overall, when counting all the competitors, spectators, event organizers and volunteers, more than 1,000 people were at this year’s event.
